Racing Rugby Club beat Cowrie to win NRFF Southwest League
Racing RFC clinched the championship title in the male category of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation Southwest League. This top of the table encounter, held at the main bowl of the National Stadium in Surulere, was one of the most fiercely contested matches since the league’s inception. With the national ticket and the prestigious title of Southwest champions at stake, both clubs went all out, delivering a gripping display of skill with tackles, ankle taps, and mauls flying on the field.
The first half ended 8-0. Racing RFC showed great poise in the first few minutes and were rewarded with a penalty kit that was slotted home by scrumhalf Monday Omorogieva. Cowrie dominated in the scrum and line-outs, but they were unable to capitalise on the opportunities as Racing maintained their accuracy with their kicking game. Soon after, former captain David Oyekanmi crossed the whitewash after receiving a miss pass from Monday after a scrum set play.
After the interval, Cowrie increased the pace, but the seasoned Racing team proved too strong for them. Flyhalf Kelechi scored Racing’s second try of the game by intercepting a pass in Cowrie’s 22-meter area.
Joshua Rankin, Cowrie’s flyhalf, came over to score a consolation try in the 78th minute as Racing defeated Cowrie RFC by a decisive 15–5 score to win the Southwest Rugby League title.
In other matches, Eco II RFC overwhelmed Ogun State Kings RFC with an impressive 31-0 victory, while former champions Police RFC took some time to find their rhythm, eventually defeating Gosar RFC 14-0. However, Gosar RFC’s story had a bright spot, as the female team redeemed the club’s pride with a solid 22-0 win over Police RFC. This victory crowned them champions in the female category.
Racing RFC will proudly represent the Southwest region in the upcoming national rugby finals.
