Delta and Edo States Dominate Pools as Teams Advance to High-Stakes Semi-Finals
ASABA, DELTA STATE – The rugby 7s pitches at the 2025 National Youth Games came alive with exhilarating action on Sunday, August 31st, as the nation’s most promising U15 talents showcased skill, speed, and determination in Asaba.
Day one of the tournament saw commanding performances across both the boys’ and girls’ categories, setting the stage for a spectacular finals day on Monday, September 1st.
Girls’ Tournament: Hosts and Defending Champions in Firm Control
The girls’ competition was a display of sheer dominance from two powerhouse teams.
In Pool A, the defending champions, Edo State, lived up to their reputation with a flawless performance. They opened their campaign with a strong 15-0 victory over Ogun State and sealed their top spot in the pool with a hard-fought 5-0 win against a determined Abia State side. They finish the pool stage with a perfect record, not conceding a single point.
Abia State secured their place as pool runners-up after a convincing 12-0 win against Ogun State.
In Pool B, the host team, Delta State made a powerful statement on home turf. They stormed to an impressive 28-0 victory over Rivers State, demonstrating attacking flair and a solid defensive line. Their performance positions them as favourites heading into the medal rounds. Rivers State finishes second in the pool.
Boys’ Tournament: Kano and Delta Emerge as Teams to Beat
The boys’ tournament delivered intense rivalry and high-scoring matches.
Kano State emerged as the dominant force in Pool A, putting on a spectacular display of running rugby. They powered their way to two decisive victories, scoring 40 points without reply against Abia State and another opponent, announcing themselves as serious title contenders. Abia State secured the second semi-final spot from the pool.
The battle in Pool B was fiercely contested. The host team, Delta State, displayed grit and discipline, securing two wins without conceding a point to finish first in the pool. A highlight was their crucial match against rivals Edo State.
Edo State showcased their attacking prowess with a significant win, but it was Delta’s consistency that earned them the top seed.
Semi-Final Fixtures Set for Medal Charge
The stage is now set for a thrilling conclusion to the rugby sevens event. The semi-final matches scheduled for Monday, September 1st, promise nail-biting action:
Girls’ Semi-Finals:
SF 1: Edo State (1st Pool A) vs Rivers State (2nd Pool B)
SF 2: Delta State (1st Pool B) vs. Abia State (2nd Pool A)
Boys’ Semi-Finals:
SF 1: Kano State (1st Pool A) vs. Edo State (2nd Pool B)
SF 2: Delta State (1st Pool B) vs. Abia State (2nd Pool A)
The winners will advance to the gold medal matches, while the defeated semi-finalists will battle for bronze. The event will culminate in the team walk-out, the playing of the national anthem, and the medal and award presentations.
